Greetings Daizies,
I hope you all are having a prosperous fall so far! I’m happy to say that these last few weeks are flying on by. But in those weeks, I have managed to keep up with my protein treatment schedule and wanted to put together a summary of great protein treatments for 4c hair.
How to Use a Protein Treatment for Natural Hair
A protein treatment is best used after shampoo your hair and before using a rinse-out conditioner or deep conditioning. Be sure to pay attention to the ends of your hair to ensure the formula fully penetrates the ens of your hair, the most fragile portion of your strands. Understanding your hair porosity is a key detail to know when deciding on a protein treatment. To learn how to do a porosity test on your hair, check out my blog post here.
Aphogee Keratin Reconstructor, 8 Ounce
They had me at “2-minute”. Anything to shorten the time it takes to finish the wash day process, the better. I’d been looking at this protein treatment for YEARS and then finally decided to add it to my Amazon cart. This product is my current protein treatment in rotation which I use about 1 to 2 times a month. It contains keratin amino acids, botanical oils, and vitamin oils which are all-powerful ingredients to help restore strength and softness to your hair.
ORS HAIRestore Hair Mayonnaise 16 Ounce(Pack of 2)
The ORS hair mayonnaise is a product I’ve used for the longest on this list. A few years ago I tried it as my first protein treatment and have enjoyed it ever since. It contains all of the ingredients you’d use if you were to go the DIY protein treatment route; olive oil, and egg protein. You can find this at Walmart and for as low as $6
L’Oreal Paris Hair Care Elvive Total Repair 5 Damage-Erasing Balm, Almond and Protein, 8.5 Fluid Ounce
This rinse-out mask aims to take on the mighty task of undoing the damage of up to one year within one use. That’s a huge cross to bear but there are some great ingredients, such as almond oil and wheat protein, that equip this balm for this task. It works to mend and heal split ends, dullness, and dehydration.
Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Protein-Strong Treatment, 8 oz
Lastly, is the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Yogurt protein treatment. I saved this for last because it is on my list to try. The only thing that has deterred me is the price relative to the size. I tend to use up an 8oz jar in about one use, so I’ve always tried to get a product size that will last me at least a couple of times. Nonetheless, this product features yogurt and honey, which are two great humectants for natural hair. One of the main concerns about protein treatments is that it dries out your hair so having a hydrating protein treatment would help mitigate this risk. I was JUST at Target and still forgot to pick this up, but it is definitely on my list next time I go.
I hope this list gives you some ideas about protein treatments to try. I have especially been adamant about incorporating consistent protein treatments to my color-treated natural hair so I can maintain strong and moisturized hair. As always,
